Recognition

Four honors, and the institutions that confer them.

Each of the bodies below maintains a public register of its recipients. Every award on this page links to that register, so a reader never has to take the page's word for it.

01

Forensic Engineering Award

American Society of Civil Engineers

Recognises — Forensic engineering

ASCE's recognition within forensic practice — the investigation of structural failure, its causes, and its prevention. The discipline that turns a collapse into a finding, and a finding into a code change.

02

International Award of Merit in Structural Engineering

International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering

Recognises — International structural engineering

IABSE confers the Award of Merit on a single engineer at a time, selected across its worldwide membership. It is the association's highest individual distinction and its recipients are named publicly each year.

03

OPAL Award — Outstanding Projects And Leaders

American Society of Civil Engineers

Recognises — Lifetime civil-engineering leadership

ASCE's lifetime achievement honor, awarded in a small number of leadership categories each year. OPAL recognises a career, not a project.

04

Gold Medal

The Institution of Structural Engineers

Recognises — Extraordinary contribution to structural engineering

The Institution's highest award, given only when the Council judges that a contribution merits it. It has been conferred a few dozen times since its establishment, and not at all in many years.
